Quicksand

Formed in New York in 1990, Quicksand initially positioned itself as a continuation of the New York hardcore scene around Walter Schreifels, Alan Cage, Sergio Vega, and, in its early days, Tom Capone. The band developed a tense and melodic post-hardcore, fed by massive riffs, angular rhythms, and a sense of space that also brings it closer to the 1990s alternative metal. After a self-titled debut EP released in 1990, Quicksand broadened its audience with Slip in 1993 and Manic Compression in 1995, two records that established a more expansive writing approach, where hardcore urgency coexists with denser textures and more open choruses. This period was accompanied by tours with bands such as Helmet, Fugazi, Rage Against the Machine, Anthrax, or The Offspring, before a breakup in 1995, followed by a brief reformation between 1997 and 1999. Returning to the stage from 2012, Quicksand has since sustained its activity, releasing Interiors in 2017 and Distant Populations in 2021, in a tightened trio format after Tom Capone's departure. Quicksand thus retains an identity defined by rhythmic precision, guitar tension, and a constant balance between hardcore nervous energy, alternative rock, and dark melodies.
