Eric Church

Born in 1977 in Granite Falls, North Carolina, Eric Church emerged in the early 2000s on Nashville’s country scene after moving to the city and signing with Capitol Nashville. A singer-songwriter, Church has developed a strain of contemporary country steeped in Southern rock and “outlaw” influences, with prominent electric guitars and narrative lyrics centered on rural American life, bars, the open road, and the tensions between faith, rebellion, and attachment to tradition. His debut album, “Sinners Like Me” (2006), laid the groundwork for this aesthetic, continued by “Carolina” (2009) and “Chief” (2011), which cemented Church’s place in mainstream country while retaining a darker, more introspective approach than is typical for the genre. With “The Outsiders” (2014) and “Mr. Misunderstood” (2015), he leaned further into rock and experimented with looser song structures, while “Desperate Man” (2018) explored more soul-inflected, vintage textures. In 2021, the three-part project “Heart,” “&,” and “Soul” distilled the different facets of his writing—from slow ballads and mid-tempo tracks to more abrasive cuts—and affirmed his lasting foothold at the crossroads of country radio, stadium rock, and autobiographical songwriting.
