Carmen Villain

Born in Michigan to a Mexican mother and a Norwegian father, and raised in Oslo, Carmen Villain develops a path that links dream pop, shoegaze, ambient, dub and slow electronic music. Based in London in the mid-2000s, she begins to write and record music, initially more guitar- and voice-centered, before her work evolves toward more atmospheric forms, where textures, muted basses, spacious rhythms and discreet melodic motifs take a central place. Carmen Villain releases Sleeper in 2013 and Infinite Avenue in 2017, two albums that mark this transition between hazy songwriting and a more immersive approach. With Both Lines Will Be Blue in 2019, she moves more clearly toward a minimal ambient dub, often built on soft grooves, flute breaths and repetitive lines. Only Love From Now On, released in 2022, extends this direction with an even purer writing, situated between ambient experimentation, diffuse jazz and slowed electronic pulsation. Present both in concert contexts, festivals and on stages connected to exploratory electronic music, Carmen Villain builds a coherent discography, grounded in the movement between improvisation, composition and work in the sonic space.
