The Saxophones
Born on the independent scene in Oakland, California, The Saxophones brings together composer and multi‑instrumentalist Alexi Erenkov and drummer Alison Alderdice in a duo that blends slow pop, hushed jazz and surf influences. Originally an intimate project focused on writing slow‑tempo songs with spare arrangements, The Saxophones drew attention with the 2016 EP If You’re On The Water, where melodic saxophone combines with reverbed guitars and minimal rhythms. The album Songs of The Saxophones, released in 2018, established an aesthetic marked by strong nostalgia for the popular music of the 1950s and 1960s, between languid ballads, echoes of doo‑wop and touches of folk. In 2020, Eternity Bay continued this exploration of atmospheric pop with jazz inflections and songwriting centered on Alexi Erenkov’s voice, while To Be a Cloud (2023) slightly broadened the palette with brighter textures without abandoning the intimate register. In the studio as on stage, The Saxophones favors tight line‑ups and restrained playing, placing the duo at the intersection of indie pop, slowcore and cinematic ambient song.
