Jay-Jay Johanson
Born in 1968 in Trollhättan, Sweden, Jay-Jay Johanson emerged in the mid-1990s with songwriting steeped in trip-hop, electronic pop and jazz influences, supported by a melancholic crooner voice. Based in Stockholm, he became known with the album “Whiskey” (1996), which blends slow rhythms, electronic textures and cinematic atmospheres, followed by “Tattoo” (1998) and “Poison” (2000), which firmly established his world between downtempo, intimate songs and hushed orchestrations. Across records such as “Antenna” (2002), “Rush” (2005) and “The Long Term Physical Effects Are Not Yet Known” (2007), he steered his writing toward a more electronic pop while retaining a strong narrative dimension and a taste for spare arrangements. Jay-Jay Johanson continued with “Self-Portrait” (2009), “Spellbound” (2011), “Opium” (2015), “Bury the Hatchet” (2017) and “Kings Cross” (2019), expanding collaborations in studio and on stage with musicians from both jazz and electronic music scenes. Alongside his albums, he also composes for film and television, extending into images the introspective, slightly nocturnal mood that runs through his discography.
