Michelle Gurevich
Born in Toronto to a family of Russian-Jewish immigrants and initially active under the name Chinawoman, Michelle Gurevich turned to music in the mid-2000s after working for about ten years in film. She built a musical world between sadcore, slowcore, indie pop, art pop and folk, with slow songs, lo-fi production, spare keyboards and a contralto voice that accentuates the overall melancholic tone. Her first recordings, made alone in her bedroom, led to Party Girl (2007) and Show Me the Face (2010) — two albums that established a minimalist songwriting style strongly marked by her Russophone heritage. In 2011 she opened a European tour for Patrick Wolf and then expanded her presence on European stages, notably in Russia and Eastern Europe. Under her own name she released Let’s Part in Style (2014), New Decadence (2016), Exciting Times (2018), Ecstasy in the Shadow of Ecstasy (2020) and It Was the Moment (2024), evolving a slow, intimate and ironic pop informed by orchestral song traditions, dark romanticism and a cinematic sensibility.
