Music at the MAC: The Bad Plus, Chris Potter, Craig Taborn

Info

On March 6, 2026 at Meridian Arts Centre in Toronto, Music at the MAC brings together The Bad Plus, saxophonist Chris Potter and pianist Craig Taborn. Formed in Minneapolis, The Bad Plus pushed the piano‑bass‑drums format by folding indie rock pulse and pop motifs into jazz language, favoring collective writing, sudden shifts and focused grooves; in recent years the group has broadened its palette while keeping interaction and dynamics at the center.

A key voice on the New York scene since the 1990s, Chris Potter shapes melodic, muscular lines on tenor and moves easily between structured themes and open stretches. His playing balances rhythmic bite and harmonic detail, whether in acoustic quartets or larger ensembles.

Craig Taborn brings a piano approach that draws on minimalism, electronics and improvised music. From solo sets to trios and quartets, he layers patterns, varies density and plays with the sense of groove, between abstraction and clear melody.

Three distinct perspectives on contemporary jazz share the same stage at Meridian Arts Centre, for an evening built on interplay, contrasts and momentum.
