ZAYN
Born in Bradford in northern England, ZAYN, whose full name is Zain Javadd Malik, first made his mark with One Direction after appearing on The X Factor in 2010. He left the group in 2015 to pursue a solo career more focused on contemporary R&B, pop and alternative R&B. With Mind of Mine (2016) he moved away from the boy‑band format, favouring more introspective songwriting, slow, hazy productions and a vocal approach that relies on nuance, falsetto and soulful textures. That direction continued on Icarus Falls (2018) and Nobody Is Listening (2021), where ZAYN blends R&B ballads, electronic touches and hip‑hop influences in an often subdued register. Throughout his career he has alternated solo material with selective collaborations — notably with Taylor Swift, Sia, PartyNextDoor and Timbaland — while remaining relatively scarce on stage and in the media. In 2024, Room Under the Stairs marked a further evolution with a more organic sound informed by soul, folk and country accents, confirming a trajectory built at the margins of the pop codes that first revealed him.
