Billy Gibbons

A Texan guitarist and singer born in Houston in 1949, Billy Gibbons made his mark in the late 1960s with the psychedelic band Moving Sidewalks before founding ZZ Top in 1969, a blues-rock trio rooted in the Houston scene. With ZZ Top, Gibbons developed a guitar style centered on boogie, electric blues, and rock driven by repetitive riffs—a signature that left a lasting imprint on the band’s identity both on record and on stage. From the 2010s onward, Gibbons opened a more personal chapter with a solo career exploring various strains of blues and Southern rock. His first solo album, Perfectamundo (2015), introduced Latin hues and looser grooves, while The Big Bad Blues (2018) returned to a direct blues-rock approach, blending originals and covers. Hardware (2021) extended this exploration in a grittier rock register, influenced by the desert atmospheres of the American West. Frequently invited onto other musicians’ recordings, Gibbons moves between studios and major international stages, maintaining a constant link with the legacy of Texas blues while adapting his songwriting and guitar work to diverse collaborative contexts.
