Nothing
Formed in Philadelphia (USA) in 2010, the shoegaze project Nothing centers on singer and guitarist Domenic “Nicky” Palermo, who emerged from the local hardcore scene. From the EP Downward Years to Come (2012) onward, Nothing developed an aesthetic that blends 1990s shoegaze lineage with alternative rock and passages bordering on slowcore, marked by heavily distorted guitars, low-in-the-mix vocals, and a strong penchant for melancholic melodies. Signed to Relapse Records, the band released Guilty of Everything (2014), followed by Tired of Tomorrow (2016) and Dance on the Blacktop (2018), albums that established Nothing on the independent touring circuit in North America and Europe. The Great Dismal (2020) extends this approach, heightening the contrasts between noisy soundscapes and more stripped-back passages, and was followed by the compilation The Great Dismal B-Sides (2021). Frequently associated with acts from metal, punk, or shoegaze circles, Nothing has released numerous split EPs and collaborative projects—most notably the joint album When No Birds Sang with Full of Hell in 2023—and continues along a path that blurs the lines between heavy rock, dream pop, and noise.
