Beth Ditto

Born Mary Beth Patterson in Searcy and raised in Judsonia, Arkansas, Beth Ditto emerged in the late 1990s on the American independent scene after moving to Olympia, Washington, where she co‑founded Gossip in 1999. With that band, she developed a sound between indie rock, post‑punk, garage rock and dance‑punk, driven by a soulful voice and a confrontational vocal style that contrasted with the trio's spare arrangements. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Gossip appeared on alternative rock circuits as well as major European festivals, while Beth Ditto pursued several collaborations, notably with Simian Mobile Disco on 'Cruel Intentions' (2009) and with Blondie on 'A Rose by Any Name' (2013). As a solo artist she released the EP Beth Ditto in 2011, leaning toward synth‑pop and more overt dance‑pop, and the album Fake Sugar in 2017, where she returned to rockier textures—guitars, Southern soul and taut pop. After Gossip's split in 2016, Beth Ditto also worked as an actress on screen before the group's reformation in 2024, while maintaining her movement between indie rock, pop and more electronic formats.
