Austra
Austra has been working since the late 2000s within a synthpop idiom tinged with dark‑wave and electronic elements, centered on the vocal timbre of Toronto‑born, classically trained musician Katie Stelmanis. Born out of Toronto’s indie and queer scenes, Austra initially took the form of a trio with Maya Postepski and Dorian Wolf before evolving into a project focused on Stelmanis, surrounded on stage and in the studio by a rotating cast of musicians and collaborators. The debut album, “Feel It Break” (2011), established a dark, minimalist aesthetic in which cold synth lines and pronounced rhythms support a strongly present vocal; “Olympia” (2013) opened Austra’s sound to more danceable tempos and a club‑oriented writing approach. With “Future Politics” (2017), Austra foregrounded themes related to social and ecological change, translating them into broader, more melodic electronics. “HiRUDiN” (2020) continues that trajectory with a more intimate approach, playing on contrasts between synthetic textures, detailed vocal arrangements and acoustic elements. Across tours and festivals, Austra has affirmed itself as a project at the intersection of cold wave, experimental pop and emotionally driven electronic music centered on Katie Stelmanis’ vocal performance.
