Thy Catafalque
Led by Hungarian musician Tamás Kátai, Thy Catafalque is an experimental metal project where black metal, progressive rock, Central European folk, ambient and electronic textures intersect. Born in late 1990s Hungary—initially as a duo before becoming Kátai’s near‑solo undertaking—Thy Catafalque has developed an aesthetic marked by extended structures, frequent use of the Hungarian language and a taste for contrasts between extreme passages, atmospheric sections and folk‑inspired melodic motifs. The early albums, including “Sublunary Tragedies” (1999), “Microcosmos” (2001) and “Tűnő idő tárlat” (2004), established a foundation still firmly rooted in black metal, which broadened toward a more progressive form on “Róka Hasa Rádió” (2009) and “Rengeteg” (2011). Later based in Edinburgh, Tamás Kátai continued with “Sgùrr” (2015), “Meta” (2016), “Geometria” (2018), “Naiv” (2020), “Vadak” (2021) and “Alföld” (2023), each release exploring new balances between saturated guitars, electronic elements, acoustic instrumentation and guest voices. Long confined to the studio, the project has, since the second half of the 2010s, surrounded itself with a Hungary‑based live band to present Thy Catafalque on various metal and experimental stages.
