The Primitives
Formed in Coventry in 1985, The Primitives sit in the lineage of British jangle pop, indie pop and power pop, with a direct sound built around taut guitars, clear melodies, and an energy inherited from both melodic punk and 1960s pop. After an initial period with singer Keiron McDermott, the band quickly found its most identifiable form with the arrival of Tracy Tracy on vocals, alongside Paul Court, and then drummer Tig Williams. The first singles released on their own Lazy Records label, such as 'Thru the Flowers' and 'Stop Killing Me', established The Primitives on the English indie scene in the latter half of the 1980s. The group later widened its audience with the album Lovely in 1988, followed by Pure in 1989 and Galore in 1991, before a breakup in the early 1990s. Reactivated in 2009, The Primitives resumed live performances and relaunched their recording activity with the EP Never Kill a Secret in 2011, then the albums Echoes and Rhymes in 2012, comprising covers of obscure 1960s songs, and Spin-O-Rama in 2014. Since returning, The Primitives have continued to alternate between indie venues, tours and new releases, staying faithful to a concise, lively and straightforward pop-writing style.
