Big Country
Born in Dunfermline, Scotland, Big Country took shape in 1981 around Stuart Adamson, formerly of the Skids, together with Bruce Watson, Tony Butler and Mark Brzezicki. Initially part of the British post‑punk and new wave scene, the band quickly developed a more distinctive identity built on taut, melodic rock in which the guitars sometimes evoke the inflections of bagpipes and traditional Scottish music. This approach runs through The Crossing (1983), Steeltown (1984), The Seer (1986) and Peace in Our Time (1988), before albums such as No Place Like Home (1991), Why the Long Face (1995) and Driving to Damascus (1999), which reveal a more direct songwriting style blending FM rock, folk rock and roots influences. After a hiatus following Stuart Adamson’s departure and his death in 2001, Big Country returned to the stage from 2007 with new lineups centered on Bruce Watson. The band later released The Journey in 2013. Throughout Big Country’s history, the tension between rock energy, anthemic melodies and Scottish grounding remains the guiding thread.
