The Undertones
Formed in Derry, Northern Ireland, in the mid‑1970s, The Undertones first made their mark on the local scene by combining punk energy with a keen sense of pop melody. The band was built around singer Feargal Sharkey, brothers John and Damian O’Neill on guitars, Michael Bradley on bass and Billy Doherty on drums. The Undertones developed a direct sound based on short formats, simple riffs and lyrics focused on adolescence, everyday life and romantic relationships. Spotted in the wake of the first British punk wave, they released a self‑titled debut album in 1979, driven by fast, melodic tracks, and followed it with Hypnotised in 1980, which extended this power‑pop aesthetic while refining the arrangements. Positive Touch (1981) and The Sin of Pride (1983) marked a move toward more elaborate structures and pop and soul influences, before the group split the same year. The Undertones reformed in the late 1990s with Paul McLoone on vocals, the other four original members remaining in place, and resumed performing and recording, notably with the albums Get What You Need (2003) and Dig Yourself Deep (2007), continuing to write concise, melodic, rhythmic songs at the crossroads of punk rock, garage and power pop.
