Buzzcocks
In the mid-1970s Manchester's punk scene saw the emergence of Buzzcocks, a band formed in Bolton in 1976 by Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto, soon joined by Steve Diggle. After the self-released EP "Spiral Scratch" in 1977, Howard Devoto left Buzzcocks, leaving Pete Shelley on vocals and guitar for the group's first notable phase between 1977 and 1981, during which they toured extensively across the UK and Europe. The albums "Another Music in a Different Kitchen" (1978), "Love Bites" (1978) and "A Different Kind of Tension" (1979) established a style in which punk's speed and energy combined with strongly pop-oriented melodies, short song formats and lyrics focused on relationships, desire, doubt and everyday tensions. Buzzcocks thus developed a sound often associated with melodic punk and later forms of pop-punk, driven by a direct rhythmic approach and instantly recognizable choruses. After a split in the early 1980s, Buzzcocks reformed at the end of the decade around Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle, released "Trade Test Transmissions" (1993), then "All Set" (1996), "Modern" (1999), "Buzzcocks" (2003) and "Flat-Pack Philosophy" (2006), while maintaining a steady live presence. Following Pete Shelley's death in 2018, Buzzcocks continued under the impetus of Steve Diggle, who took on the role of lead singer and guided the recording of "The Way" (2014) and later "Sonics in the Soul" (2022), extending the aesthetic of a band that has remained faithful to direct, melodic and concise songwriting.
