The Growlers

The Growlers, formed in 2006 in Dana Point, California, are one of the most distinctive acts on the American indie-rock scene, thanks to a cult musical universe often labeled "beach goth": a blend of psychedelic, surf, post-punk and garage rock infused with dark humor, nonchalance and a faded Californian imagination. Propelled by Brooks Nielsen’s raspy, theatrical voice and Matt Taylor’s atmospheric guitar, the band forged an identity outside conventional codes, cultivating a hazy, vintage sound that is at once gritty and sunlit. Their discography spans a fertile decade and includes Gilded Pleasures (2013), Chinese Fountain (2014), City Club (2016) produced by Julian Casablancas, and Natural Affair (2019), where their songwriting mixes romantic melancholy, urban narratives, humor and a fantasized Southern California. Their popularity also surged thanks to a visceral, independent live aura and the creation of their own festival, Beach Goth, which became a cultural gathering point until it paused in 2019. Far from passing trends, The Growlers built a global cult following attracted to their DIY aesthetic, ambiguous personas, campy videos and storytelling. A band with lasting influence, they navigate between mystery, chaos and lo-fi poetry, crafting a distinctive rock in which irony often conceals melancholy and guitars glint like coastal neon under a smoky sky.
