The Academy Is...

Born in the Chicago area in the early 2000s, The Academy Is... emerged within the American emo and pop-punk wave while incorporating elements of alternative rock, with melodies centered on William Beckett’s vocals. Built around Beckett and guitarist Mike Carden, the band first made its mark on the local scene before signing to the independent label Fueled by Ramen, which opened the door to national touring alongside acts from the same scene, notably Fall Out Boy. The debut album, Almost Here (2005), established a songwriting style defined by direct choruses and clean guitars, followed by Santi (2007), where The Academy Is... explored a denser, slightly darker sound, and then Fast Times at Barrington High (2008), which further emphasized a power-pop orientation and themes tied to late adolescence. The EP Lost in Pacific Time: The AP/EP (2009) extended this progression before an official split in the early 2010s. From 2015 onward, The Academy Is... reunited intermittently for anniversary shows and festivals, reconnecting with the emo and alternative scene that shaped its beginnings.
