Skepta

In Tottenham, north London, Joseph Junior Adenuga grew up amid pirate radio and the rise of British grime — a formative backdrop for Skepta. Initially active in Meridian Crew and later co‑founding Boy Better Know with his brother Jme, Skepta developed in the 2000s a concise, punchy lyrical style supported by sparse instrumentals, taut basslines and a flow that moves between grime, UK rap and more club‑oriented formats. His career as an MC has been accompanied by work as a producer and DJ, fostering an aesthetic rooted in the London scene while remaining open to other currents, from hip‑hop to certain electronic textures. After Greatest Hits (2007), Microphone Champion (2009) and Doin’ It Again (2011), he broadened his audience with Konnichiwa (2016), which won the Mercury Prize, and continued with Ignorance Is Bliss (2019). Over the years Skepta has collaborated with British and international artists while maintaining a direct link to grime’s codes: clash energy, a knack for slogans and minimalist production.
