Playboi Carti
Born in 1996 in Riverdale, Georgia, Jordan Terrell Carter, better known as Playboi Carti, first established himself in Atlanta’s rap scene before moving toward the Awful Records collective and later the AWGE network linked to A$AP Rocky. He initially released tracks online under the name $ir Cartier, already outlining a minimalist trap style focused on ad-libs, repetitive loops, and a pronounced sense of rhythm rather than storytelling. The 2017 mixtape “Playboi Carti,” driven by a cloud-rap aesthetic and production from Pi’erre Bourne, placed him in a lane of pared-down structures and chanted hooks. With the 2018 album “Die Lit,” Playboi Carti pushed this approach further, playing with silence, simple melodic motifs, and a highly fragmented use of the voice, making it as much a rhythmic instrument as a vehicle for lyrics. “Whole Lotta Red” (2020) marked a more radical turn toward darker trap, informed by punk and goth imagery, featuring a high-pitched timbre often described as a “baby voice” and abrasive instrumentals. Between Atlanta, New York, and international tours, Playboi Carti has expanded his collaborations with the new generation of American rap while consolidating a sonically distinctive identity that is instantly recognizable within contemporary hip-hop.
