PJ Morton
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, PJ Morton has built a career at the crossroads of R&B, soul, gospel and funk, with keyboard playing and songwriting shaped by his city's musical tradition and his early training in church. The son of pastor Paul S. Morton, he first released solo projects such as Emotions (2005) and Perfect Song (2007), before widening his audience with Following My First Mind (2012) and especially New Orleans (2013), an album that more clearly affirms his link to Southern soul and organic textures. At the same time, Morton joined Maroon 5 as a touring keyboardist in 2010 and later became a full member, situating his work within a broader pop framework without abandoning his personal trajectory. His discography continues this dual anchoring with Gumbo (2017), Paul (2019), Gospel According to PJ (2020) and Watch the Sun (2022). Over the years Morton has maintained a consistent approach across secular repertoire and gospel, favoring warm arrangements, a supple voice and writing centered on melody, vocal harmonies and New Orleans’ rhythm-and-blues heritage.
