Molly Nilsson

Born in Gröndal, Stockholm, and based in Berlin since the mid‑2000s, Molly Nilsson has developed an independent body of work situated between minimalist synth‑pop, lo‑fi and electronic pop, with songwriting that has gradually incorporated broader forms close to progressive pop. Molly Nilsson composes, records and releases her music herself through her label Dark Skies Association, following a DIY ethos that shapes both the sound of her early records and her working methods. After These Things Take Time (2008), she followed with Europa (2009), Follow the Light (2010) and History (2011), a period in which her approach mixed drum machines, keyboards, cool melodies and a direct vocal style. John Maus’s cover of “Hey Moon” in 2011 broadened her visibility and coincided with the start of international touring. From The Travels (2013), released on the Scottish label Night School, she gained wider distribution while retaining artistic autonomy. The albums Zenith (2015), Imaginations (2017), 20-20 (2018), Extreme (2022) and Un-American Activities (2024) continue this trajectory, with lyrics shifting from the intimate to more political and social themes. On stage, Molly Nilsson most often performs alone, in a stripped‑down format faithful to the aesthetic of her recordings.
