Octave One
Rooted in Detroit’s techno tradition in the United States, Octave One brings the Burden brothers together around a project that emerged in the late 1980s. Initially conceived as a family collective, it later narrowed to the stage duo of Lenny and Lawrence Burden. Deeply embedded in the local Detroit scene, the group soon founded its own label, 430 West Records, which became the primary home for its releases and a platform to assert an identity blending Detroit techno, house, and soul influences. Released in 2000 and featuring Ann Saunderson, the track Black Water marked a milestone, incorporating more vocal lines and warm arrangements over a direct rhythmic foundation. The albums Summers on Jupiter (2005), Burn It Down (2015), and Love by Machine (2016) continue this pursuit of a sound that is both percussive and melodic and deliberately aimed at the dance floor, playing with contrasts between harmonious layers and repetitive sequences. Known more for live performances than DJ sets, the duo brings the improvisational spirit of the studio to the stage and has made its mark on numerous club and festival stages across Europe and North America, while remaining closely tied to the catalog and history of 430 West.
