Barbara Tucker

Born in Brooklyn in 1967, Barbara Tucker belongs to the New York house tradition, bringing a direct and expressive soul vocal. Active since the mid-1980s, she began in off-Broadway theatre, dance and choreography, then worked on projects connected to C&C Music Factory, Deee-Lite and Soul System, and also provided backing vocals for Deee-Lite and George Clinton. Her career shifted in the early 1990s when she collaborated with Masters At Work, the duo Little Louie Vega and Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez, who supported several of her best-known club tracks, including “Beautiful People” and “I Get Lifted” (1994), “Stay Together” (1995), “Everybody Dance (The Horn Song)” (1998) and “Stop Playing With My Mind” (2000). Barbara Tucker performs within a vocal house style rooted in club culture, with soulful lines, energetic phrasing and productions designed for the dancefloor. Over the years she has continued this work between the international house stage and collaborations—notably with Blaze on “Most Precious Love” in the mid-2000s—and with electronic producers, remaining primarily associated with a repertoire of singles rather than an album-based discography.
