Black Marble
Launched in Brooklyn in 2011 around Chris Stewart, initially with Ty Kube, Black Marble occupies a minimalist synth-pop territory with cold wave hues, built on steady rhythms, spare melodies and a voice often placed back in the mix, creating a melancholic, nocturnal atmosphere. Black Marble emerged with the EP Weight Against the Door and the album A Different Arrangement, both released in 2012 on Hardly Art, at a time when the project circulated mainly within American indie and post-punk scenes. In 2016 Black Marble changed format as Ty Kube departed and Chris Stewart continued the project solo; the album It’s Immaterial, released on Ghostly International, accompanied his move from the East Coast to the West Coast. The story continued at Sacred Bones with Bigger Than Life in 2019, the EP I Must Be Living Twice in 2020 and Fast Idol in 2021. Across these records, Black Marble maintains concise songwriting and a cold but accessible aesthetic at the intersection of synth-pop, darkwave and a softened post-punk.
