Baxter Dury

Born in 1971 in Wingrave, Buckinghamshire, Baxter Dury has since the early 2000s developed a repertoire spanning indie rock, new wave, alternative pop and touches of post-disco, driven by a voice often halfway between spoken and sung, and a songwriting that is dry, narrative and melodic. The son of Ian Dury, Baxter Dury launched his discography with the Oscar Brown EP in 2001, followed by the album Len Parrot’s Memorial Lift in 2002 on Rough Trade, then Floor Show in 2005 and Happy Soup in 2011. With It’s a Pleasure in 2014 he refined a darker, more synth-driven nocturnal aesthetic, continued on Prince of Tears in 2017, recorded with Ash Workman and Craig Silvey and featuring, among others, Jason Williamson and Rose Elinor Dougall. In 2018 he took part in the B.E.D project with Étienne de Crécy and Delilah Holliday, at the crossroads of electro and dark pop. The Night Chancers (2020) and I Thought I Was Better Than You (2023), produced by Paul White, confirmed this line of minimal groove, spoken word and oblique songcraft, with contributions from Madelaine Hart, Eska and JGrrey. Baxter Dury has also shared bills with Noel Gallagher, Pulp and Primal Scream and played venues such as the 100 Club, KOKO, the Roundhouse, Glastonbury, Rock en Seine and OFF Festival. In 2025 he continues this trajectory with Allbarone, produced by Paul Epworth.
