Maya Jane Coles

Born in London, Maya Jane Coles began developing her production practice as a teenager, initially influenced by hip-hop and trip-hop before moving toward a deep, precise house often threaded with dub, techno and bass-music textures. She released her first maxis in the late 2000s and gained wider recognition with the 2010 EP What They Say, which established her on the British and international electronic scene. Under her own name she favors supple rhythms, warm, understated basslines and club-oriented songwriting with dark edges; under the alias Nocturnal Sunshine she explores a heavier, more confrontational register between dubstep, trip-hop and hip-hop influences. She also formed the duo She Is Danger with Lena Cullen. Her album discography includes Comfort (2013), Take Flight (2017) and Night Creature (2021), while Nocturnal Sunshine yielded Nocturnal Sunshine (2015) and Full Circle (2019). She also contributed the mixes DJ-Kicks: Maya Jane Coles (2012) and Fabric 75 (2014) and continues to produce remixes for artists such as Tricky, The xx, Florence + The Machine and Depeche Mode.
