Lil' Kim

Born in Brooklyn in 1974, Lil’ Kim, whose real name is Kimberly Denise Jones, emerged on the New York rap scene in the 1990s as part of the Junior M.A.F.I.A. collective led by The Notorious B.I.G., with whom she helped shape a hardcore style rooted in East Coast tradition. From her solo debut Hard Core in 1996, Lil’ Kim developed a confrontational rap marked by explicit lyrics, a bold approach to sexuality and an urban imagery where luxury, power and violence intersect — a direction she continued on The Notorious K.I.M. (2000) and La Bella Mafia (2003). In 2005, The Naked Truth accompanied a period of legal proceedings and incarceration that affected her public image as much as her music. She later returned with the album 9 in 2019 and has remained active through mixtapes and collaborations. Lil’ Kim has appeared as a featured artist with many American rappers and R&B singers, contributed to pop tracks such as the 2001 cover of "Lady Marmalade," and maintained a media presence across film, television and reality TV. Over her career, Lil’ Kim has been associated with an incisive delivery of rap, firmly rooted in Brooklyn, combining street narratives, fashion references and a claim for a central place for women in hip-hop.
