Nelly
Born in Austin, Texas in 1974 and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, rapper and songwriter Nelly first gained attention in the late 1990s as part of the collective St. Lunatics before launching his solo career. With the album Country Grammar in 2000 and Nellyville in 2002, Nelly established a Midwestern hip‑hop aesthetic blending a relaxed flow, sung hooks and R&B/pop influences, as heard on tracks like “Ride Wit Me,” “Hot in Herre,” and “Dilemma” featuring Kelly Rowland. The albums Sweat and Suit (2004) continued this approach with both club-oriented songs and more melodic ballads, while Brass Knuckles (2008), 5.0 (2010) and M.O. (2013) confirmed Nelly’s taste for collaborations with artists from R&B, pop‑rap and country. His work with Tim McGraw and Florida Georgia Line represents a series of crossovers between hip‑hop and country that culminated in Heartland (2021), an album explicitly oriented toward that world. Active on American and international stages, Nelly has also pursued film and television projects, positioning his career at the intersection of mainstream rap and popular entertainment in the United States.
