Mary J. Blige

Born in the Bronx and associated very early with Yonkers, in New York State, Mary J. Blige established herself at the start of the 1990s with a formula that brings together contemporary R&B, soul and hip-hop in a single vocal language. Signed to Uptown at the end of the 1980s, she launched her career with What's the 411? in 1992, then confirmed this orientation with My Life in 1994, two albums often cited for their role in establishing hip-hop soul in the American landscape. Her music blends writing focused on relationships, vulnerability and self-assertion with productions ranging from new jack swing to a more organic soul, including hip-hop rhythms and, depending on the period, touches of neo-soul or urban pop. Over the years, Mary J. Blige broadened her scope with Share My World in 1997, Mary in 1999, No More Drama in 2001, The Breakthrough in 2005, Growing Pains in 2007, The London Sessions in 2014, Strength of a Woman in 2017, Good Morning Gorgeous in 2022 and Gratitude in 2024. Her career also includes notable collaborations with Method Man, U2, Nas, Drake or Disclosure, as well as a regular presence on major international stages. Alongside her musical career, Mary J. Blige develops acting work in film and television, notably in Mudbound, The Umbrella Academy and Power Book II: Ghost.
