Busta Rhymes
Born in Brooklyn in 1972 to Jamaican parents, Trevor George Smith Jr., better known as Busta Rhymes, first came to prominence in the early 1990s as a member of Leaders of the New School, a group tied to the Native Tongues scene and featured on A Tribe Called Quest’s “Scenario.” He then launched a solo career with the 1996 album The Coming, showcasing an East Coast–rooted rap marked by a blisteringly fast flow, theatrical delivery, and dancehall inflections. The albums When Disaster Strikes... (1997) and E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event): The Final World Front (1998) extended this aesthetic, blending boom-bap productions, more electronic textures, and chant-like hooks. At the turn of the 2000s, Busta Rhymes increased his output—with Anarchy (2000), Genesis (2001), and It Ain’t Safe No More... (2002)—while rallying around him the Flipmode Squad collective and later the Conglomerate label. Firmly established in the American rap landscape, he collaborated with Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, and Missy Elliott, and appeared regularly on film soundtracks. The projects The Big Bang (2006), Back on My B.S. (2009), Year of the Dragon (2012), followed by Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God (2020) and Blockbusta (2023), confirm the continuity of a trajectory in which Busta Rhymes maintains a constant link between hardcore rap, Caribbean influences, and formats conceived for both radio and the stage.
