Light Asylum

Launched in Brooklyn in 2007 around Shannon Funchess and keyboardist Bruno Coviello, Light Asylum operates within an electronic vein where darkwave, synthpop and post‑punk intersect, with rhythmic tension and a dark aesthetic nourished by the legacy of the 1980s. Light Asylum emerged with the EP In Tension in 2010 (reissued in 2011), followed by the album Light Asylum in 2012. The project stood out for Shannon Funchess’s deep, intensely physical voice, placed at the center of compositions built on austere synths, dry pulses and short melodies, balancing cold directness and club energy. After the first album’s release, Bruno Coviello left the group and Light Asylum became a solo project carried by Funchess, initially developed in New York and later continued from Portland. In parallel, Shannon Funchess contributed to tracks by TV on the Radio, !!! and Telepathe, before collaborating with The Knife on “Stay Out Here” in 2013. Since then Light Asylum has continued to evolve within post‑punk, darkwave and electronic circles.
