Les Tambours du Bronx
Born in Varennes-Vauzelles, near Nevers, in the late 1980s, Les Tambours du Bronx brings together a large collective of percussionists around a setup of upright metal barrels struck while standing, inspired by a local working-class district nicknamed “the Bronx.” Emerging from the street and alternative festival scene, the project developed a repertoire of industrial percussion where tribal pulses, rock energy and techno-like structures intersect; it is built on repetitive patterns, massive unisons and exacting work on group dynamics. Over tours in France and abroad, the ensemble has evolved its setup, incorporating samplers, keyboards, bass, guitars and sometimes vocals, reinforcing connections with metal and electronic music scenes. The stage configuration relies on about fifteen musicians arranged in a line, exploiting sonic power, rhythmic offsets and a collective choreography of strikes. This long-term approach and the spatialisation of sound position Les Tambours du Bronx in an intermediate field between music, performance and visual arts, while retaining a directly readable and accessible rhythmic foundation.
