Grace Cummings
Based in Melbourne, Grace Cummings has since the late 2010s developed a writing style that sits at the intersection of folk rock, blues and orchestral ballad, driven by a deep and highly expressive voice. Initially a musician behind a drum kit before teaching herself guitar, she released her debut album Refuge Cove in 2019 on the Australian label Flightless. This record established a fairly stripped-down format, centered on acoustic songs with folk and blues contours. Grace Cummings then broadened her palette with Storm Queen in 2022, a self-produced album where songwriting grows in scope while retaining a direct approach, between rock tension, sober lyricism and more elaborate arrangements. In 2024, she continues this evolution with Ramona, recorded in California with producer Jonathan Wilson, a record where strings, brass and piano accompany songs that are more theatrical without breaking from her folk anchor. Parallel to her musical career, Cummings has also worked on the Australian scene, notably in theatre in Melbourne. On stage she has shared tours or posters with artists such as Weyes Blood, Evan Dando or J Mascis, in a register where folk tradition, rock intensity and storytelling sense intersect.
