Hanne Boel
Danish singer born in 1957, Hanne Boel emerged in the early 1980s on a Nordic scene where soul, pop, jazz and gospel intersect. Graduating in 1980 from the Royal Danish Academy of Music, she began by teaching while singing in various ensembles, then joined the funk band Blast — an experience that rooted her in a style blending groove, rhythm and blues influences and collective work on backing vocals. In the late 1980s she launched her solo career and released a string of studio albums, initially strongly marked by soul and R&B, before gradually incorporating pop colours and more intimate atmospheres. Hanne Boel’s concerts, whether in clubs, at festivals or in larger halls, emphasize a direct vocal interpretation, funk‑based rhythms and a taste for brass and keyboard arrangements. Through collaborations with musicians from jazz and Scandinavian popular music, she has steered her repertoire toward more stripped‑down formats, often centered on the dialogue between voice and a few instruments, while remaining committed to accessible songwriting where melody retains a central role.
