Gnags

Formed in Aarhus in the mid-1960s, Gnags entered the Danish rock scene with a repertoire influenced by beat and Anglo‑American rock before shifting to songs in Danish. Around singer‑songwriter Peter A.G. Nielsen, the band developed in the 1970s and 1980s a blend of rock, pop and reggae, sometimes tinged with funk, where danceable rhythms and brass lines support narrative and often socially minded songs. Gnags’ discography spans several decades, with a series of studio albums from the 1970s onward that accompany the evolution of the Danish pop‑rock scene and mark different aesthetic phases of the group—from the more organic sounds of their early years to more synth‑oriented productions and later a return to an adult rock register. Live performances have been central to the band’s history, with a regular presence on the country’s major stages and festivals, notably Roskilde, where the group’s sound has been geared toward audience participation and collective choruses. Despite lineup changes over the years, Gnags has retained an identity centered on Peter A.G. Nielsen’s voice and songwriting, anchoring the band in Danish popular culture while remaining open to international influences.
