Jon Hopkins

Born in Kingston upon Thames in the southwest of London, Jon Hopkins has since the early 2000s developed a body of work situated between ambient, techno, IDM and neoclassical writing, with a marked taste for detailed textures, slow progressions and highly physical rhythmic builds. Trained in piano at the Royal College of Music, he began as keyboardist with Imogen Heap before establishing himself as a solo artist with Opalescent in 2001 and then Contact Note in 2004. His trajectory took on a new dimension from his collaborations with Brian Eno, then Coldplay on Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends in 2008, where his sense of arrangement and instrumental atmospheres found wide resonance. Hopkins then refined a more personal language on Insides in 2009, between melodic electronica and club tension, and on Immunity in 2013, a pivotal album that weaves techno pulsation, ambient compositions and meticulous sound work. In parallel, Hopkins has scored several film scores, including Monsters in 2010, and broadens collaborations, notably with King Creosote on Diamond Mine in 2011. Singularity in 2018 extends this immersive and dynamic vein, before a more contemplative turn with Music for Psychedelic Therapy in 2021. In 2024, Ritual continues this exploration of sensory electronic music, both introspective and oriented toward the live experience.
