A Winged Victory For The Sullen

Formed in the United States by Dustin O’Halloran and Adam Wiltzie, A Winged Victory for the Sullen brings together two musicians from neighboring horizons across ambient, neoclassical, drone and minimalist writing. The duo comes together in the early 2010s after their meeting in Bologna, while Wiltzie tours with Sparklehorse, and develops a slow, expansive and highly crafted music, founded on the resonances of piano, strings and orchestral textures. A Winged Victory for the Sullen released its first self-titled album in 2011, followed by Atomos in 2014, born from the collaboration with choreographer Wayne McGregor for a creation presented at Sadler’s Wells in London. Their journey extends between records, contemporary dance and scoring for image, with the soundtracks Iris in 2016 and God’s Own Country in 2017. In 2019, The Undivided Five marks a new step in their collective work, before Invisible Cities in 2021, conceived around a stage project with the choreographer Rambert. On stage as on record, A Winged Victory for the Sullen deploys a contemplative instrumental language, at the crossroads of contemporary music, ambient and a cinematic sensibility.
