Hammock
Born in Nashville around Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson, Hammock has since the early 2000s developed an instrumental music that sits between ambient, post-rock and shoegaze, with a marked fondness for guitar layers, ethereal textures, and slow progressions. The two musicians, who previously played in the alternative band Common Children, launched the project in an independent setting and first released Kenotic in 2005, followed by Raising Your Voice... Trying to Stop an Echo in 2006, which established a contemplative, expansive and highly cinematic writing. As the records continued, Hammock broadened its vocabulary by incorporating more orchestration and neoclassical elements, notably on Chasing After Shadows... Living with the Ghosts (2010), Departure Songs (2012) and Oblivion Hymns (2013). The duo remains associated with ambient and post-rock scenes where attention to atmosphere takes precedence over demonstrative virtuosity, with live appearances relatively rare at its beginnings, including an appearance at the Wordless Music Series. Hammock has also undertaken several occasional collaborations, worked for the image with the Columbus film score in 2017, and continued a rich discography with Everything and Nothing in 2016, Mysterium in 2017, Universalis in 2018, Silencia in 2019, Elsewhere in 2021 and Love in the Void in 2023.
