James Bay

Born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England, James Bay first trained in the Brighton and then London open mic circuits, where his guitar-centered writing and a slightly hushed tenor voice helped him break through in the early 2010s. His music sits between folk rock, indie rock, soul and pop rock, with songs built on direct melodies, restrained arrangements and a strong taste for the dynamics between acoustic ballads and more electric crescendos. After several EPs released in 2013 and 2014, James Bay established himself more widely with the tracks Hold Back the River and Let It Go, before the release of his debut album Chaos and the Calm in 2015. This period saw him on large British and international stages, from Glastonbury to tours as a support act for Hozier or Taylor Swift. Subsequently, James Bay expanded his palette toward a grander and more pop-oriented writing on Electric Light in 2018, then continued this shift with the EP Oh My Messy Mind in 2019, the album Leap in 2022 and Changes All the Time in 2024. Across these records, James Bay has maintained a songwriting core inherited from folk and British rock while integrating deeper soul and contemporary textures, in a format designed as much for the live stage as for tightly expressed songs.
