Free Throw
Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Free Throw emerged within the early-2010s North American emo and pop-punk wave, built around a core of members centered on singer and guitarist Cory Castro. Formed in 2012, the band made a name for itself on the independent scene through club tours and involvement in the DIY network, before releasing its debut album Those Days Are Gone in 2014, characterized by a mix of melodic emo, agitated guitars and highly personal songwriting. Free Throw refined their approach on Bear Your Mind (2017) and What’s Past Is Prologue (2019), developing more contrasted structures that alternate fast passages, rhythmic breaks and more introspective sequences. With Piecing It Together (2021) and Lessons That We Swear to Keep (2023), the band remained focused on lyrics addressing mental health, addiction and coming of age, while maintaining a balance between punk energy, catchy choruses and indie rock influences, thereby securing their place in the contemporary emo landscape.
