Friendly Fires
Formed in St Albans, Hertfordshire, Friendly Fires brings together Ed Macfarlane, Jack Savidge and Edd Gibson — three musicians who passed through an earlier, more upfront band before steering their songwriting toward a crossroads of indie rock, indietronica, dance-punk, nu-disco and pop with funk and shoegaze inflections. From the mid-2000s Friendly Fires attracted attention with early EPs and refined a rhythmic, taut and melodic aesthetic led by danceable basslines, shimmering guitars and Macfarlane’s supple vocals. The trio released their self-titled debut in 2008 and Pala in 2011, an album where the pop and tropical elements took on greater prominence without relinquishing the club energy of their beginnings. After a hiatus in the 2010s — marked by side projects and a collaboration with Andrew Weatherall on the track "Before Your Eyes" — Friendly Fires returned with "Love Like Waves" in 2018 and the album Inflorescent in 2019. From the start the band has moved between UK venues, European festivals and international stages, maintaining a distinctive approach that blends pop songwriting, electronic textures and live-band tension.
