Fischerspooner
Formed in New York in 1998 from the meeting of Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner, Fischerspooner first emerged within the early-2000s electroclash scene before expanding into a more sophisticated synthpop influenced by new wave, disco and performance art. Fischerspooner drew attention in New York clubs and art spaces with highly choreographed shows conceived as visual as well as musical performances, and gained wider visibility with the single “Emerge” and the album #1 in 2001. The duo followed with Odyssey in 2005, where their songwriting turned more pop while retaining a cool, danceable electronic tension, and with Entertainment in 2009, which emphasized club formats and synthetic textures. After a quieter period, Fischerspooner returned with Sir in 2018, an album developed with Michael Stipe and Boots, presented in a more direct, sensual and pared-down manner. Between club culture, fashion, contemporary dance and conceptual art, Fischerspooner has carved out a distinctive path in American electronic pop, evolving their aesthetic from the provocative performative beginnings toward a more intimate writing without abandoning their synthetic and stage-based roots.
