Evanescence
Formed in the mid-1990s in Little Rock, Arkansas, Evanescence took shape around singer-pianist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody, amid a rock landscape marked by the rise of alternative and metal. After several self-released recordings—including the Evanescence EP (1998), Sound Asleep (1999), and the demo Origin (2000)—the band signed with Wind-up Records and in 2003 released Fallen, an alternative rock/metal album with a pronounced gothic hue, where lyrical vocals, piano, distorted guitars, and orchestral arrangements take center stage. Driven by Bring Me to Life and My Immortal, and by the inclusion of tracks on the Daredevil film soundtrack, the record firmly established the group on the international scene and earned two Grammy Awards in 2004. The Open Door (2006) extended this dark aesthetic, emphasizing atmospheric and choral elements, before a hiatus and the release of Evanescence (2011), which refocused the band’s sound around a heavier rock/metal with more straightforward song structures. With Synthesis (2017), Amy Lee and her band revisited part of their catalog in orchestral and electronic form, exploring a more cinematic side, then returned in 2021 to a more straight-ahead take on alternative metal with The Bitter Truth. Through lineup changes and tours of major rock and metal festivals, Amy Lee has remained the creative nucleus, shaping a world where gothic imagery, introspective themes, and a blend of heavy and melodic textures stay at the forefront.
