Mick Flannery

Born in County Cork and hailing from Blarney, Mick Flannery has since the mid-2000s developed a songwriting rooted in folk, blues, Americana and a sober rock, carried by a husky voice and arrangements that alternate between acoustic guitars, piano and band instrumentation. A former stonemason by training, Flannery emerged with Evening Train in 2007, a debut album conceived as a narrative, after being distinguished at the Nashville International Songwriting Competition. He followed with White Lies in 2008, then Red to Blue in 2012 and By the Rule in 2014, asserting a more direct song format without leaving a narrative and melancholic vein. I Own You appeared in 2016, before a self-titled album in 2019, recorded between Ireland and Los Angeles. Over the years, Flannery moves between folk stages, rock circuits and Irish festivals, while multiplying occasional collaborations, notably with Lisa Hannigan, Anaïs Mitchell and Susan O’Neill. With the latter, he co-writes In the Game in 2021, a duos album recorded remotely, where vocal harmonies take a central place. Night at the Opera in 2022 shows another facet of Flannery, through a concept built around chess games, while Goodtime Charlie in 2023 extends his taste for characters, narratives and spare atmospheres.
