Arcángel
Born in Huelva in 1977, Arcángel began developing a flamenco singing style at an early age, nourished by the great Andalusian voices, and made his professional debut as a teenager. The cantaor Arcángel is rooted in the cante jondo tradition while exploring more open forms, where classic palos sit alongside songwriting influenced by Spanish popular song and rock. His discography starts with the album “Arcángel” (2001), followed by “La calle perdía” (2004), “Ropavieja” (2007), “Quijote de los sueños” (2011), “Tablao” (2015), “Al este del cante” (2017), which was honoured at the Latin Grammy Awards, and then “Hereje”, a project in which Arcángel invited authors and composers such as Leiva, Juanes, Vetusta Morla and Vanesa Martín to engage in dialogue with flamenco. On stage, Arcángel performs in both specialist and mainstream theatres and festivals across Europe, the United States, Latin America and the Maghreb — from Carnegie Hall in New York to Sadler’s Wells in London. His career balances collaborations with musicians, singers and bailaores of different generations and participation in cross-disciplinary projects such as the musical feature film “Jesucristo Flamenco” directed by Francisco Javier Gutiérrez.
