Ribbon Skirt
Formed in Montréal, Québec, Ribbon Skirt is a Canadian indie rock duo comprising Anishinaabe singer-guitarist Tashiina Buswa and multi-instrumentalist Billy Riley. The project initially took shape under the name Love Language, with two EPs released in 2021 and 2023 — Trying to Reach You and Indian Cowboy — which established the first foundations of the duo’s collaborative work. The change of name to Ribbon Skirt explicitly references Tashiina Buswa’s Anishinaabe heritage and accompanies a new stage in the group’s artistic identity. Signed to Mint Records, Ribbon Skirt released their debut full-length album Bite Down in April 2025; its selection on the shortlist for the Polaris Music Prize 2025 gave the project broader visibility within the Canadian independent scene. That same year, Ribbon Skirt announced PENSACOLA, an EP scheduled for October 3, 2025, also on Mint Records and presented by the duo as an epilogue to Bite Down, thus extending the creative cycle opened by their first album under the current name.
