Girl Group
Based in Liverpool, Girl Group brings together Katya Birkeland, Lily Christlow, Thea Gundersen, Mia Halvorsen and Maria Tollisen — five British and Norwegian musicians who met at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Formed in 2023, the quintet develops a direct, melodic indie-pop sound, threaded with a edgier contemporary pop and a collective songwriting approach focused on relationships, group life and the social expectations placed on women. After a first single, “Life is Dumb” (2023), and “Lil’s Room” (2024), Girl Group has refined a format where pop choruses, taut guitars and choral dynamics intersect. In 2025 they released “Yay! Saturday”, “Flink Pike” and “Your Fantasy” ahead of the EP Think They’re Looking, Let’s Perform, issued in 2025. The same year they appeared on the BBC Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds and opened for Olivia Dean in Paris. With “Rage Song” the band also pushes its writing towards a pop-punk color, while Maria Tollisen co-produces much of the repertoire, contributing to Girl Group’s cohesive sound.
