JOHAN

Around singer‑guitarist and songwriter Jacob (Jacco) de Greeuw, Johan developed in the early 1990s in Hoorn, the Netherlands, initially under the name Visions of Johanna, a reference to Bob Dylan, before adopting the name Johan in 1996. Emerging from the Dutch alternative rock scene, the group sits within indie rock and melodic pop rock, centered on bright guitars, structured songs and concise songwriting. After several singles, Johan released a first self‑titled album in 1996 on Excelsior Recordings, which opened the way to national tours, an incursion into the United States and an appearance at Pinkpop. The second album, Pergola, appeared in 2001, followed by THX JHN in 2006 and 4 in 2009, during a period marked by numerous lineup changes, a move to Amsterdam and breaks related to De Greeuw's health. Johan split up at the end of 2009 after a farewell tour, before reforming from 2015 and returning in 2018 with Pull Up, then in 2024 with The Great Vacation, consolidating the project's lasting place in Dutch pop rock.
